EC Markets official website: Behind the Federal Reserve's "hawkish pause", the inflation beast war under the tariff chaos

Federal Reserve officials have made it clear recently that while the Trump administration's trade policy may weigh on economic growth, it will not respond with rapid interest rate cuts in the short term. The core logic is that the imposition of tariffs may continue to drive up inflation, and this risk may even offset the need for monetary policy easing due to the economic slowdown. March meeting notes show that,EC Markets official websiteAgainst the backdrop of "heightened uncertainty", policymakers have reached a consensus that interest rate adjustments require extreme caution.

The "double-edged sword effect" of tariffs

The sweeping tariffs announced by Mr. Trump in early April sparked panic in global markets, with stock markets tumbling and bond markets aberrant. While his subsequent partial reversal of the decision spurred a rally in equities, policy reversals have added to uncertainty about the economic outlook. Even if some of the tariffs are suspended, the long-term shadow of trade friction will still dampen business investment and household spending, while previous tariffs have started to push up commodity prices, according to Citibank.

The Federal Reserve's "Policy Toolbox Dilemma"

Faced with the pincer attack of rising inflation and slowing growth, the Federal Reserve is caught in a dilemma: if it prioritizes curbing inflation, it needs to maintain high interest rates, which may exacerbate unemployment; if it cuts interest rates to stimulate the economy, it may allow inflation to get out of control. Both St. Louis Federal Reserve President Musalem and Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Kashkari have warned that tariff-induced price increases are by no means a "one-off shock", and their chain reaction may lead to long-term inflation.

The gap between market expectations and policy reality

Although financial marekts once bet that the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates aggressively, policymakers have emphasized that "wait and see" is the core of the current strategy. Richmond Fed President Barkin's metaphor is particularly vivid: "Driving in a thick fog, you can neither step on the accelerator nor brake hard." This cautious attitude reflects that the actual impact of Trump's policies remains uncertain.

Summary: Where to go? Monetary policy on the balance beam

The Fed's March minutes bluntly stated that the future may face "painful trade-offs". Mousalem predicted that the US economy will grow "significantly below trend", but recession is not a baseline scenario; Kashkari pointed out that tariffs are simultaneously suppressing investment and consumption, and the policy tightening effect has partially replaced the need for interest rate hikes. In the tug-of-war between inflation expectations and employment targets, the only certainty for the Fed may be "uncertainty itself" - as Barkin said, when consumer savings are exhausted and price pressures have not subsided, any policy action may trigger a new chain reaction. Monetary policy in the fog of this trade war is bound to be a trek on thin ice.
