The three major stock indexes rose by more than 1%, and Tesla rose by more than 5%.
US stocks
US stocks closed slightly higher on Monday as investors hunted for dips after the main benchmark index recorded its biggest percentage drop in 2023 last week, but concerns persisted about future rate rises to curb stubbornly high inflation. All three indexes climbed more than 1 per cent shortly after opening, partly as Treasury yields retreated, but all ended well away from their daily highs.
Stocks gave up gains over the course of the day as Treasury yields moved off their daily lows.
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 72.17 points, or 0.22 percent, to 2889.09.
- The S & P 500 rose 12.2 points, or 0.31 percent, to 3,982.24.
- The Nasdaq index rose 72.04 points, or 0.63 percent, to 11,466.98.
Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded its biggest weekly percentage decline since September, while the S & P 500 and Nasdaq each recorded their biggest weekly declines since December as economic data and comments from Federal Reserve officials heightened expectations of a more aggressive rate hike. Data showed that new orders for key capital goods made in the United States rose the most in five months in January, and shipments of such core capital goods also rebounded, indicating that companies' spending on equipment picked up at the start of Quarter 1.
Falling yields helped growth stocks rebound 0.63 percent, with electric carmaker Tesla jumping 5.46 percent after the company said its factory in Brandenburg, near Berlin, was producing 4,000 vehicles a week, three weeks earlier than originally planned, according to the latest production plan, which Reuters learned.
