Due to the uncertainty of the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike, the New Zealand dollar fell below 0.6000 against the US dollar.

The New Zealand dollar gave up recent gains against the dollar, trading around 0.5980 on Thursday. However, the New Zealand dollar was supported by the upside of China's economic data, and the country's trade outlook improved.

Moreover, Beijing's injection of Rmb1 trillion in low-cost financing into the real estate sector is a strategic move to address credit crunch concerns. A move of this magnitude could have a ripple effect on economies around the world, including New Zealand.

The positive news from China has supported the package for the troubled real estate sector, positively impacting the New Zealand dollar (NZD). As a major dairy exporter to China, the improved economic outlook and increased demand for the NZD are linked to these developments.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve's rate hike, the New Zealand dollar fell below 0.6000 against the US dollar (Chart 1).

However, data on Thursday showed that China's housing price index fell 0.38% in October, after falling 0.1%. The dollar index (DXY) rose after the U.S. economic data was released on Wednesday, extending its gains for a second day in a row.

US retail sales moderated modestly to 0.1 per cent in October, missing expectations of a 0.3 per cent decline, raising the prospect of a challenge to the progress of US inflation as the Fed's cautious stance created uncertainty for markets in spite of recent weak inflation data.

In addition to this, the US producer price index (PPI) unexpectedly fell by 0.5%, compared to expectations for a 0.1% rise, and the annual PPI fell from 2.2% to 1.3%, which may have a moderating effect on market sentiment regarding further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

Market participants may be waiting for the upcoming US weekly jobless claims data later in the North American session. It could provide more insight, especially if the US labour market is seen as a catalyst for rising inflation and could affect market dynamics.

At 19:09 Beijing time, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 0.5994/96 against the US dollar.
