How much money can I make by speculating in foreign exchange?
Foreign exchange strategy
Although a strategy may have many components and profitability can be analyzed in various ways, strategies are usually ranked according to their win rate and risk/reward ratio.
win rate
If you win 55 times out of 100 trades, your winning rate is 55%. Although this is not required, for most day traders, a winning rate of more than 50% is ideal, and 55% is acceptable and achievable.
Risk/reward
Risk/reward refers to the amount of capital that is risked in order to make a certain amount of profit. If a trader loses 10 pips on a losing trade but makes 15 pips on a winning trade, then she makes more money on a winning trade than she loses on a losing trade. This means that a trader will make a profit even if she only wins 50% of her trades. Therefore, making more profits on profitable trades is also a strategic element that many forex day traders struggle with.
A higher winning rate means your risk/reward ratio is more flexible, while a higher risk/reward ratio means your winning rate can be lower and you will still be profitable.

What if?
Let's say a trader has $5000 in capital funds and they have a 55% win rate on their trades, which is a decent grade. They only risk 1% of their capital base or $50 per trade. This is achieved by using a stop loss order. In this case, the stop loss order is placed 5 pips away from the entry price of the trade, while the target is placed 8 pips away.
This means that the potential return on each trade is 1.6 times the risk (8 pips divided by 5 pips). Remember, you want to make the winners outweigh the losers.
When trading Forex pairs for two hours during the active hours of the day, it is usually possible to make about 5 rotations (rotations include entry and exit) using the above parameters. If there are 20 trading days in a month, then the average trader makes 100 trades a month.
trading leverage
In the United States.Forex broker(Also known asForex Platform) provides leverage of up to 50:1 for major currency pairs. In this example, assume that the trader uses leverage of 30:1, as usually this is sufficient leverage for forex day traders. Since the trader has $5,000 and leverage is 30:1, the trader is able to hold positions worth up to $150,000.
Forex brokers usually don't charge commissions, but instead increase the spread between the bid and ask prices, making it harder to make a profit on day trades.DooPrime: The Real ECN BrokerThey offer very small spreads, making it easier to trade profitably, but they typically charge around $2.50 per $100,000 traded ($5 rotation).
Trading currency pairs
If you are trading intraday on a currency pair like USD/CAD, you can risk $50 per trade, and the change in value per pip is $10 in standard lots (100,000 units worth of currency). This also means that a successful trade is worth $80 (8 pips x $10).
This estimate shows how much money a day trader can make by executing 100 trades in a month.
55 trades are profitable. 55 x 80 dollars = $4,400
45 transactions failed. 45 x (50 dollars) = ($2,250)
Without commissions, the gross profit would be $4,400 - $2,250 = $2,150 (although the win rate could be lower).
If you use a commission broker, your net profit is $2,150 - $500 = $1,650 (although the win rate will be higher).
Assuming a net profit of 1650 yuan, then the return on the account for this month is 33% (1650 yuan divided by 5000 yuan). This may seem high, which is a very good return.
Slippage greater than expected loss
You can't necessarily find five good day trades every day, especially when the market is moving very slowly over a long period of time.
Slippage is an inevitable part of trading. It results in bigger losses than expected, even with stop-loss orders. This is common in rapidly changing markets.
To take slippage into account when calculating your potential profit, reduce net profit by 10% (this is a high estimate of slippage, assuming you avoid holding when major economic data is released). This will reduce the net profit potential generated by your $5,000 trading capital to $1,485 per month.
You can adjust the above scheme according to your typical stop loss and target, capital, slippage, win rate, position size, and commission parameters.
summary
This simple risk control strategy shows that with a 55% win rate, more money is made on the winners than on the losers, and gains of more than 20% per month can be achieved through forex intraday trading. Most traders should not expect to make so much, and while it sounds simple, in reality, it is more difficult.
Even so, forex day traders with a decent strategy can earn 5% to 15% per month with leverage as long as they have a decent win rate and risk/return. Also, keep in mind that you don't need a lot of capital to get started, usually $500 to $1,000 is enough.
