Gold Analysis: Inflection Point or Noise? Multiple Choice Questions at $4,100

On Thursday (October 23), the spot gold US market traded above $4,100 before the market. After rising to $4381.29, it fell back. The short-term was suppressed by the phased strength of the US dollar, but the demand for macro hedging remained solid. The volatility of the equity market expanded, the performance of some technology weights was less than expected, and the news of Russian-related energy companies being sanctioned jointly amplified the risk-off preference; at the same time, the market still has differences in the policy path of the Federal Reserve and the stickiness of inflation during the year, which made gold show a rhythm of "rapid growth and then deceleration" at a high level.

Gold Analysis: Inflection Point or Noise? Multiple Choice Questions at $4,100 (Figure 1)

    Fundamentals

Recently, multiple cross-border policy uncertainties have resurfaced, discussions on technology-based export restrictions have heated up, and risk premiums have risen passively. Russia's energy sector is facing new restrictions, spilling over into commodity supply and demand expectations and transportation costs, which has raised the pricing of "tail risk" at the geographical level. At the same time, the quarterly reports released by several global leading technology companies are cautious, profits and guidance have failed to boost market confidence, the "risk appetite - duration interest rate" chain in the equity market has been broken for a short time, and institutional funds tend to return to defensive assets.

On the foreign exchange side, the dollar's phased recovery has strengthened the upward constraints on the nominal price of precious metals, but the "real interest rate" support for gold on the interest rate side has not been destroyed: the market still expects the Federal Reserve to maintain a gradual policy orientation centered on "data dependence" in the coming quarters. The uncertainty of the inflation path and the differentiation of growth momentum provide a "steady-state chassis" for gold to be allocated for a long time.

From the perspective of the central bank, the difference between the Fed's follow-up communication and the European Central Bank and the Bank of England will continue to drive the direction of the interest rate spread and the US dollar; if the pace of the Bank of Japan's policy normalization is slower than expected, it may make the trade-off between the risk-off attribute of the yen and the yield more complicated. Overall, the periodic fluctuations in the policy spread determine the "elastic-resistance" cycle in the upward process of gold, while geopolitical and regulatory variables provide "underpinned" demand-side support.

    Technical aspects:

The daily chart shows that the price was blocked at 4381.29 after a strong upward trend, and then retreated to run in the range above the Bollinger Band. Currently, the upper Bollinger rail is 4367.19, the middle rail is 3964.72, and the lower rail is 3562.26. The price stands above the middle rail but is far from the upper rail, showing the typical characteristics of "high retracement - strong finishing". The shortened K-line entity and the increase of the upper shadow line indicate that the upper throwing pressure is beginning to become apparent; but the longer the retracement does not touch the previous important level of 4050, the more favorable it is to the bulls.

On the indicator side, MACD (26, 12, 9) is currently DIFF 131.15, DEA 141.82, and bar chart -21.33, showing "column contraction after high divergence" - kinetic energy slows down but has not yet formed a trend reversal signal; if there is a secondary golden fork above the zero axis in the future, it will create conditions for an upswing. The RSI reading of the relative strength index is 58.19, falling back from the overbought area to a medium-high level, which belongs to "cooling down and not breaking".

Overall judgment, 4367.19-4381.29 constitute a first-line heavy resistance, 4300 is the second-level resistance; the lower 4050 is the primary support, followed by the Bollinger middle rail 3964.72; the lower 3850 and 3611.77 are medium-term structural support. As long as the price runs above 3964.72, the daily upward trend is still established, and the retracement is more like a "mean reversion" of the previous sharp rise.

    Outlook

Short-term (a few days to a week): If the marginal US inflation and employment data weakens, and the Federal Reserve communicates patiently, the fall in the dollar will release the nominal price elasticity of precious metals, and the price of gold is expected to try 4300 again, further challenging the range of 4367.19-4381.29. However, if the data is strong in stages or the yield rises again, the price of gold may backtest 4050 and look at 3964.72 to verify whether the trend is still intact.

Midline (one month to one quarter): If macro uncertainties and geopolitical disturbances continue, gold's position preference will remain in the "dip allocation" mode, and the uplift channel above the middle rail 3964.72 may continue, targeting the new expansion above the previous high. On the contrary, if the major central banks turn to the eagle synchronously, the real interest rate will compress the valuation of gold, and the price may form a longer box consolidation at 3850-3964.72.

Conclusion: Around $4,100, gold enters the window of "strong consolidation - re-selection". If the bulls want to restart the trend, they need to consolidate their bottom position above 4050 and promote a second upside through the resonance of quantitative and kinetic energy; if the bears want to dominate, they must break through 3964.72 and amplify the decline to 3850, which may change the medium-term long structure.
