The US PPI data exceeded expectations, and the US dollar index rebounded

On Thursday (August 14), the July producer price index (PPI) data released by the United States far exceeded market expectations, which brought new challenges to the recent market expectations that the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates. Affected by this, the dollar index successfully recovered some of its losses, ending the previous two consecutive days of decline. The specific data showed that the US wholesale price rose by 0.9% month-on-month, driven by the rise in service and commodity costs, significantly higher than the market consensus expectation of 0.2%.

Market expectations for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates have not completely subsided, but the specific magnitude of the September rate cut has sparked more discussion. According to the "Fed Watch Tool" data of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the federal funds futures market still expects a high probability of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates by 25 basis points at the September meeting. However, after the latest PPI data was released, market speculation for a larger rate cut has basically dissipated. Some analysts pointed out that, hycmforeign exchangeTraders at other institutions are reassessing the future path of interest rates.

Previously, there had been suggestions that the Federal Reserve could implement deeper interest rate cuts, but the current data suggest that this possibility has become very remote. Matt Weller, an industry analyst, pointed out that the data suggest that "it is very difficult to justify more than one or two rate cuts this year". This view reflects the general concern in the market that if the labour market does not deteriorate further, the scope for the Federal Reserve to pursue aggressive monetary easing will be relatively limited.

Inflation sticky risk emerged, U.S. bond yields rose slightly

Yields on short-term US Treasuries rose on the back of stronger-than-expected PPI data. Among them, the yield on the 2-year Treasury rose to 3.73%; the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury rose to 4.281%. Although consumer inflation data released earlier this week eased slightly, the acceleration in producer prices this time suggests that underlying inflationary pressures may still be building, which may complicate the Federal Reserve's policy decision-making process going forward. For attentionHYCM ForexFor investors in market dynamics, such data is an important reference for judging trends.

Global central banks will be key to policy trends

At present, market participants are focusing on the upcoming annual Jackson Hole global central bank meeting of the Federal Reserve. Fed Chairperson Powell is expected to deliver key messages in the meeting speech, which may recalibrate the market's policy expectations. Some analysts have cautioned that Powell has repeatedly used this platform to send important policy turn signals. If he expresses a cautious attitude on inflation, it may dampen market optimism about the Federal Reserve's multiple interest rate cuts this year.

The dollar index fluctuates around key technical levels

From the daily chart of the Dollar Index (DXY), the index is currently making small movements near the 50-day moving average, a technical position that has become a key pivot point for short-term movements. Earlier this week, the Dollar Index briefly fell below this moving average, but regained support after the PPI data was released. Traders are watching closely to see if the index can clearly close above this moving average. If an effective breakout can be achieved, it may lay the foundation for a broader movement to follow. Market Outlook: Pay attention to the signals sent by the central bank's annual meeting

At present, the dollar index continues to fluctuate around the 50-day moving average, and the market is waiting for the annual meeting of global central banks to provide clearer direction. If the Federal Reserve chairperson sends a signal of easing in his speech, the dollar index may fall back below the key moving average and test a lower support range.

On the contrary, if the content of the speech is biased towards being vigilant about inflation, it may consolidate the support of the 50-day moving average and push the dollar index further upward. Until there is a clear signal, the short-term trend of the dollar index is expected to continue to be dominated by this key technical level, and its performance will continue to affect the short-term sentiment of the market.
