Fundamental analysis: Tariff news and data expectations are intertwined

The turning point in market sentiment was news that the Trump administration was considering phasing in tariffs. The news eased fears of a future inflation surge and helped gold prices recover slightly. People familiar with the matter said the Trump administration was concerned that accelerating tariffs could trigger an inflation shock and therefore wanted to adopt a more moderate tariff implementation plan. The move effectively averted market fears of overheating, but the news failed to provide strong support for gold prices as market expectations of Federal Reserve policy remained unclear.

This week's economic data will be a key driver of gold prices. The US Producer Price Index (PPI) will be released on Tuesday, and the market generally expects this data to have an impact on investors' interest rate expectations. If the PPI data is stronger than expected, it may trigger a heated debate on the upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI), prompting the market to reassess the direction of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. If the PPI and CPI perform less than expected, it will further deepen the market's expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged, which may continue to support gold prices.

Technical analysis: Gold prices are facing key support and pressure levels

From a technical point of view, gold prices have recently fallen back into the broader triangular consolidation pattern (pennant) range. The previous fluctuations in this range have made market sentiment unstable, so whether gold prices can break through the upper and lower boundaries of this consolidation pattern will be a key factor in determining the subsequent trend.

In terms of downside risks, gold prices first face the support of the 55-day simple moving average (SMA), which is currently located near $2,670. If this support is broken, gold prices may further decline, testing the 100-day SMA support line, which is currently around $2,635. The key support for further downside is the rising trend line at $2,615, which may effectively contain the decline in gold prices.

On the upside side, the first significant resistance level currently facing gold prices is the October 23 low of around $2,708. If it breaks through this level, the price of gold is expected to regain its upward momentum and challenge the all-time high of $2,790.

    Outlook for future trends

In the short term, gold prices are still likely to fluctuate within the triangular consolidation range, and the market focus will shift to the upcoming PPI and CPI data. If the data is strong, the market may make more hawkish adjustments to the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy, which will weigh on gold prices. On the contrary, if the economic data is weak, it will help gold prices to further maintain their upward momentum.

Overall, the gold market remains subject to complex macroeconomic factors, including inflation expectations, Federal Reserve policy and the Trump administration's tariff strategy. Investors should remain sensitive to short-term data changes and adjust their trading strategies in a timely manner.

At the time of writing, spot gold was trading at $2670.79 an ounce, up 0.30% during the day.
