EC Markets official website: Global trade clouds loom, South Korea's exports grow against the trend

South Korea's exports have proved remarkably resilient at a time when global trade is clouding over. March exports rose 3.1 per cent more than expected, providing a shot in the arm for Asia's fourth-largest economy on the eve of the Trump administration's new tariff stick. But behind the impressive performance of semiconductors and smartphones, concerns are emerging in industries such as cars and steel, and a battle to defend the lifeblood of South Korea's economy has begun.

Science and Technology Corps Carry the Banner of Growth

EC Markets official websiteIn the context of an overall export growth of 3.1%, South Korea's semiconductor exports rose by 12% year-on-year, and demand for high-end memory chips continued to be hot. Smartphone exports soared by 14%, and ship exports soared by 52%, demonstrating South Korea's deep accumulation in high-end manufacturing. These data confirm the forward-looking strategy of "building a country through technology", and also reserve ammunition for possible trade frictions.

    Undercurrents of structural risk

There are hidden worries behind the bright data: car exports rose only slightly by 1.2%, and weak demand for electric vehicles was a significant drag; petroleum products and steel exports fell sharply by 28% and 11% respectively, indicating that traditional industries are suffering a cold snap. It is particularly worth noting that exports to China fell by 4.1%, in sharp contrast with exports to the United States growing by 2.3%. This reshaping of the market structure may lay long-term hidden dangers.

Hanging Sword: April 2 Tariff Limit

As the deadline for "reciprocal tariffs" set by Trump approaches, the Korean auto industry will bear the brunt - as the third largest source of automobile imports from the United States, the 25% auto tariff will directly hit the lifeline of Hyundai, Kia and other automakers. More worryingly, if technology products such as semiconductors are also included in the tax increase list, the "main artery" of the Korean economy may be hit hard. The warning of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources is not groundless, but based on anticipating the worst-case scenario.

    The survival wisdom behind resilience

The contrarian growth of South Korea's exports is not only a demonstration of the achievements of industrial upgrading, but also a test of the ability to deal with the crisis. When the "moat" of the semiconductor industry encounters the "battering ram" of trade protection, this resource-poor country is proving that in the era of globalization ebb, technical barriers are more durable than tariff barriers. However, as the tariff deadline on April 2 approaches, this battle of technological innovation against trade barriers has just entered the most dangerous chapter.

If the United States imposes tariffs on South Korean automobiles and semiconductors, market panic will lead to the withdrawal of foreign capital from the Korean stock and bond markets, and the Korean won will come under pressure. The Korean won may be caught in a tug-of-war between "technology industry bailout" and "automotive industry drag", with a high probability of depreciation in the short term. However, if global chip demand continues to heat up, the Korean won may show "resilience in crisis" and replicate the "semiconductor-supported" trend in 2023.
