The first countries to join the Eurozone
The first countries to successfully join the European Economic and Monetary Union were Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Spain, Austria, Portugal, and Finland.
The list was decided at the European Union meeting held in Brussels on May 2, 1998. The United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden among the fifteen European Union countries refused to join the euro first and will wait and see.
Greece, on the other hand, missed the opportunity due to high debt and fiscal deficits that failed to meet the accession criteria.
From January 1, 1999, the euro will gradually replace the national currencies of the euro area.
