Societe Generale Investment Interpretation: Baltic Sea Index Declines Due to Capesize Ship Freight Prices (Figure 1)

The Baltic Exchange Dry Bulk Seaborne Index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Thursday, weighed down by weak rates for Capesize ships.

The composite index of rates for Capesize, Panamax and Handysize ships fell 1 point, or 0.1 percent, to 2,111.

The Capesize index fell 30 points, or 1%, to 3,041.

Capesize ships, which typically carry 150,000 tonnes of cargoes such as iron ore and coal, saw average daily earnings fall by $247 to $25,218.

Iron ore futures fell on Thursday, mainly due to the accumulation of steel inventories in China, the world's largest consumer, during the peak demand season, which weighed on market sentiment.

The Panamax freight index rose 23 points, or 1.2%, to 1,998, setting a new high for more than a year since May 2024.

Panamax ships, which typically carry 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, saw average daily earnings increase by $205 to $17,983.

Among small ships, the index for handyships rose 6 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,484.
